A Parent’s Guide to Early Orthodontic Evaluation
As a parent, you’re always looking out for your child’s health — from their first steps to their first tooth. But here’s something many parents don’t realize: your child should see an orthodontist by age 7 — even if their smile looks perfect!
At Cyterski Orthodontics, we’re here to guide Pittsburgh families through every stage of the smile journey — and it often starts earlier than you think.
🗓️ When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an early orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
At this stage:
Their jaw and bite are still developing
Permanent teeth are starting to come in
Subtle issues can be spotted before they become bigger (and more expensive) problems
👀 What Happens at the First Orthodontic Visit?
During your child’s evaluation at our Pittsburgh orthodontic office, we will examine:
Jaw growth and alignment
Bite patterns (like overbite or underbite)
Crowding or spacing
Habits like finger or thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and nail biting
We keep things efficient and easy.
🧠 Why an Early Evaluation Matters
Even if your child’s teeth look “fine,” there could be underlying issues that only a trained orthodontist can catch. Early orthodontic care helps:
Guide jaw growth to prevent problems
Reduce the need for tooth extractions later
Address bite or speech issues early
Save time and money by avoiding complex treatment later
It’s not always about starting braces early — it’s about knowing when the right time will be.
🧒 What If They Don’t Need Treatment Yet?
If your child doesn’t need treatment right away, we will monitor their development and let you know what treatment may be indicated in the future.
Whether it’s braces, clear aligners, or other options, we will customize a plan when the time is right!
